Where you can actually light up: consumption lounges in 2026
Updated Oct. 28, 2026: the rules on smokable hemp and the federal dates have changed since this story first ran. This version reflects them.
Legal cannabis has a strange gap. In most adult-use states you can walk into a store and buy, but you can't smoke in public, in your car, or in most hotels. Consumption lounges fill that gap, and in 2026 they're still rare. Here's where they stand in the cities we cover.
New Jersey: the newest lounge state
New Jersey's Cannabis Regulatory Commission approved its first four consumption areas in summer 2025, all attached to licensed dispensaries: High Rollers and SunnyTien in Atlantic City, URB'N in Newark and Gynsyng in Merchantville. URB'N gave North Jersey its first legal lounge, about 20 minutes from Manhattan.
New York: still waiting on the city
New York's law allows on-site consumption, but no lounge in New York City appears in the state's license portal yet. Venues like the TYSON 2.0 lounge in Brooklyn run as private social clubs. Outside the city, a handful of licensed microbusiness lounges have opened upstate and in the Hudson Valley.
Las Vegas: fewer than you'd think
Nevada legalized lounges in 2021, but by November 2025 only one state-licensed lounge was operating: DAZED! inside Planet 13. Smoke & Mirrors opened and later closed. The tribally regulated Sky High lounge at NuWu, north of Fremont Street, operates outside the state system.
Denver: the pioneer that shrank
Denver voted for social consumption in 2016, yet only a few brick-and-mortar venues operate today: Tetra Lounge in RiNo, Cirrus Social Club on East Colfax and Pure Elevations, a cannabis spa and lounge on South Santa Fe. The Coffee Joint, the country's first licensed lounge, closed in February 2026 and reopened as a psilocybin healing center.
West Hollywood: the lounge capital
WeHo still has the densest cluster in the country, including the Original Cannabis Cafe, The Woods, The Studio at The Artist Tree and Sunset Social Club, a members' lounge on Sunset Boulevard.
Texas: hemp lounges on borrowed time
Texas has no adult-use marijuana, but hemp lounges have popped up in Austin, Dallas–Fort Worth and Houston. Since July 31, 2026, Texas bans delta-8, delta-10 and THCA flower, leaving only hemp delta-9 under 0.3%. A federal hemp redefinition takes effect Nov. 12, 2026. Expect menus, and maybe some lounges, to change. Read our Texas explainer.
Lounge etiquette
- Bring a government ID; every lounge checks.
- Ask whether you can bring your own products or must buy on site.
- Start low, especially with edibles, and wait before taking more.
- Plan your ride home before your first puff.
