Cannabis laws, state by state.

Before you travel: who can buy, how much you can carry, where you can actually light up, and what changed this year. Pick a state or search below.

Federal law

Still illegal for adult use

Adult-use cannabis remains a Schedule I drug federally. In April 2026 the Justice Department moved state-licensed medical cannabis to Schedule III; a broader rescheduling review is ongoing and the order is being challenged in court.

Travel

Don't cross state lines

Taking cannabis across a state line is illegal, even between two legal states. That includes flying: airports and planes fall under federal law. National parks, federal buildings and military bases are off-limits too.

Hemp

Hemp THC changes Nov. 12

A federal law that takes effect November 12, 2026 counts THCA toward the hemp THC limit and bans most intoxicating hemp products, including high-THCA flower and many delta-8 items.

On the ballot November 3, 2026Massachusetts Question 8 would end adult-use retail sales starting January 1, 2028 (possession would stay legal). Idaho's HJR 4 would bar citizen initiatives from ever legalizing cannabis.

This isn't legal advice.Laws change often and cities, landlords, hotels and employers can add their own rules. Limits shown are for adults 21+ unless noted, and amounts are for flower unless stated. Always check the official state source linked on each card before you travel, buy or carry, and never drive impaired.
