The unwritten rules of cannabis travel

By Bluntly Zen · October 27, 2026 · 3 min read

Updated Oct. 28, 2026: the rules on smokable hemp and the federal dates have changed since this story first ran. This version reflects them.

Legal cannabis changes at every state line, and sometimes at every city line. These habits keep a trip easy for you and for the people around you.

1. Buy where you land

Crossing a state line with cannabis is illegal, even between two legal states, and airports and planes fall under federal law. Buy from a licensed store at your destination. Our Dispensary Finder lists licensed stores in 11 states.

2. Read the local rules before you pack

Possession limits, public-use rules and who can buy all vary. Ohio only allows cannabis bought in Ohio; Illinois gives visitors half the resident limit. Check the state-by-state guide.

3. Treat hotels as smoke-free unless they say otherwise

Most hotels ban smoking and vaping of any kind, and many Las Vegas resorts ban cannabis outright. Look for stays that say they're cannabis-friendly, and ask where consumption is allowed.

4. Stay off federal land

National parks, federal buildings and military bases follow federal law, which still treats adult-use cannabis as illegal. In Washington, D.C., that includes much of the National Mall.

5. Start low, especially with edibles

Edibles can take an hour or more to kick in. Take a small dose, wait, and keep water and snacks nearby. Our wellness guide explains why.

6. Ask before you light up

In a shared space, a rental or a friend's patio, ask first. Lounges have house rules on bringing your own products; follow them.

7. Never drive high

Book a ride, walk, or stay put. Impaired driving is illegal everywhere.
